Delete your account
Last updated 22 July 2026
From inside the app
Open Gistnode and go to Profile → Account → Delete account. You'll be asked to confirm. Deletion starts immediately and doesn't need our approval.
If you can't open the app
Email privacy@gistnode.comfrom any address, with the phone number registered to the account. We'll send a one-time code to that number to confirm it's yours, then delete the account. We aim to complete requests within 30 days.
We ask for that confirmation on purpose: without it, anyone who knows your number could delete your account.
What gets deleted
- Your profile: display name, username, bio, and profile photo.
- Your phone number record and the account it identifies.
- Your public encryption keys, so nobody can start a new session with you.
- Your group memberships.
- Any status posts you have live, and their media.
- Any undelivered messages still queued for you.
- Every encrypted envelope our servers were still holding for you. We could never read them, and now we don't keep them either.
What we can't delete
- Messages already on someone else's device.Gistnode is end-to-end encrypted and chat history lives on each person's own device, so a message you sent stays in the recipient's copy of the conversation unless they delete it. Deleting your account cannot reach into their phone.
- Your own chat history on your devices. It never leaves them, so uninstall the app (or clear its data) to remove it.
What we keep, and for how long
If your account was the subject of an abuse report, we keep a minimal record of that report so repeat behaviour can be recognised. It contains no message content. Beyond that, we keep nothing tied to a deleted account, other than anything we are legally required to retain.
Deleting is permanent
There is no undo and no grace period. Signing up again with the same phone number creates a brand-new account with new encryption keys — your old chats, username, and groups do not come back. Export anything you want to keep first.
